About Me

My name is Mrs. Harvey-Flowers.  I am a native of Inkster, MI and I graduated from Robichaud High School.  I earned my Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor.  I earned my Master of Arts degree at the University of Michigan - Flint.    I am currently enrolled in and Education Specialist program at the University of Michigan-Flint. (Go Blue!) I am entering my 4th year of teaching.  I am excited to be at Crestwood with each of you.

I chose to teach social studies for many reasons.  One of the biggest reasons for this is that history is just one big dramatic story.  History is full of plot twists, double crossings, and dramatic plot twists. History can be incredibly exciting and I hope each one of you gets to experience it!

I chose to teach english for a very similar reason.  Literature tells the stories often left untold in our history books.  Only when we combine our textbooks with other written texts do we get a vivid picture of our past.

I wholeheartedly believe that ALL students can learn, I believe that all students can be engaged. I believe that through the empowerment of students, and recognition of their culture, powerfully transformative things can happen in the classroom. My classroom culture will be based on the concept of “Sankofa”. Sankofa is an Adinkra symbol from West Africa that means, “ Go back and get it”. Using this concept in context, it will represent the need to 1.) Understand the past, lest it be repeated and 2.)The imperativeness of never forgetting one’s past, and one’s community. The culture of the classroom will embrace the backgrounds of each student, and their unique experiences. In order to grow authentically it is imperative that students understand and embrace their personal histories.
